Building muscle vs. Showing muscle

There is nothing more annoying than a show-off. Almost every time I go to the gym, I see at least one guy doing 50 pounds more than he should be doing and having terrible form. It is not uncommon to see people at the gym pick up a few 50 pound dumbells and attempt to do bicep curls by throwing them toward their face. But what good is that going to do? If you go to the gym, please keep in mind that your goal is to build muscle mass. If you want to show off, go look in the mirror, but when you are in the gym, you are there to work. And if you do see some guy showing off their muscles by flexing in the mirror or lifting way too much weight for him, simply ignore them.

Showing off not only makes you look dumb, but it also impairs your ability to gain muscle. While you are busy showing everybody how much weight you can lift, you are likely to injure yourself, or simply waste a workout because you aren't focusing on your goal. It is interesting how I generally see the people that like to show off back in the gym every single week, and I almost never see any improvements (as far as looks go at least).

Now, I am not saying don't be proud of yourself, and showing people every once in a while isn't so bad, but don't do it in the gym. Just remember that the gym is where you want to build muscle mass, not show it.
